Miraculous Recovery: Vadodara Medical Team Revives Patient After 1 Hour of CPR Following Cardiac Arrest
In a rare and inspiring medical case reported by Divya Bhaskar, a 52-year-old man from Godhra was brought back to life after his heart had stopped beating for a critical duration. Despite the patient’s heart remaining inactive for 15 minutes, a dedicated team of doctors in Vadodara persisted with CPR for a full hour, ultimately successfully restarting his heart and saving his life.
The patient, Mr. Dharmesh Chauhan (52), a resident of Godhra and an active RSS worker, had been admitted to a private hospital in Vadodara for knee treatment. On February 21st, he underwent knee surgery.
However, shortly after the procedure, complications arose. Mr. Chauhan suffered a massive heart attack (cardiac arrest). The situation turned critical rapidly as his heart stopped beating completely.
The Medical Battle: 1 Hour of Continuous CPR
Dr. Vishal Sardhara, who led the treatment, described the intense moments following the attack. The medical team was summoned urgently, even preparing an ECMO machine (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) anticipating the worst.
Upon assessment, the patient’s condition was deemed extremely risky. However, the medical team refused to give up. They initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) immediately.
The Critical 15 Minutes: For the first 15 minutes, there was no response from the patient.
The Glimmer of Hope: After 15 minutes of relentless effort, the team detected a single heartbeat. This solitary sign of life gave the doctors renewed hope.
- Relentless Effort: A team of 6 medical professionals took turns administering chest compressions, maintaining a rhythm of 120 compressions per minute to manually pump blood to the vital organs.
- The Revival: They continued this strenuous process for one full hour. Their perseverance paid off when the patient’s heart rhythm was finally re-established, and life returned to his body.
Defying the Odds: The Risk of Memory Loss
The report highlights the severe risks involved in such cases. When the heart stops, blood supply to the brain ceases. Typically, oxygen deprivation to the brain for such a duration leads to permanent brain damage, memory loss, or the patient slipping into a coma.
Remarkably, despite the prolonged arrest, Mr. Dharmesh Chauhan did not suffer these consequences. Dr. Sardhara noted that the patient’s kidney, liver, heart, and—most importantly—his brain, are currently functioning correctly.
Family's Perspective: "We Had Lost All Hope"
The emotional toll on the family was immense. Rakeshbhai Chauhan, the patient’s elder brother, shared his experience with the media:
“My younger brother Dharmesh is a devotee of Lord Hanuman and engages in many social service activities. For 15 minutes, the cardiogram showed a flat line. We had completely lost hope and courage, believing he had passed away. But due to the tireless hard work of the doctors, the impossible happened. My brother, who we thought had died, is alive again.”
Recovery and Discharge
Following the revival, Mr. Chauhan was given injections and stabilized. The next day, upon regaining consciousness, he was shifted to another hospital for advanced care. After approximately one and a half months of intensive treatment and recovery, he was declared healthy and was discharged to return home on April 10th.
